1 German Eller Ancestors In the May 2008 issue of the Eller Chronicles (Volume XXI, Issue 3, Pages 13-14) James M. (Jim) Eller showed us his line of descent from the immigrant ancestors of the so-called Erie Ellers, Jakob Eller, born 22 June 1797 in Gau-Odernheim, Hesse, Germany and his wife Julianne Becker. Although Jim was not able to connect on paper with other Eller lines in the US it was discovered through DNA testing that Jim was a cousin of descendants in both the John Jakob and Christian lines from the group of five 1740s era Eller immigrants that were originally thought to be brothers. This search was an effort to make that paper connection between Jim s line and the John Jakob and Christian lines. While it was not successful in that regard it did provide information on about 50 direct ancestors in Germany for Jim s line. A possible reason for not being able to make the connection between the different lines was the lack of records in the primary years of interest ( ) for the village, Eimsheim, Oppenheim, Hesse, where many Eller families in that region originated. The key item Jim had for his immigrant ancestor was the specific village in Germany where the ancestor was born. With that a researcher only needs to search the church metrical books from that village to prove the information and then follow the trail wherever it leads. Jim s Eller ancestors in Germany were common people. The Ellers themselves were shepherds, while other occupations noted were tailor and shoemaker as well as farmer. It may be noted that Michael Eller s wife, Katharina Neubauer, whom he married in the US, also emigrated from the same immediate area of Germany, Albig, Alzey, Hesse, a village within 10 kilometers of Gau-Odernheim. Her German ancestors are not shown here, but are available from the author. Sources for the following information are individual village church metrical books from that time period as recorded on FHL microfilms , , , and In the family that came to the US these books showed some differences, mainly with birth dates, from what Jim had found in his research. On one occasion Gommersheim was called a monastery. Death record also stated that he was originally from Eimsheim. The connection between Johannes/Anna Maria and their son Georg Conrad is somewhat tenuous as no birth record was found for Georg. The connection is based on: 1)Johannes and Georg Conrad during their working careers both held the same job at the same location. That is being a shepherd at a sheep farm at (probably a monastary named) Gommersheim bei Odernheim. 2) Johannes and Anna Maria lived in Gau-Odernheim up to the time Anna Maria died in May Then for the last three months of his life Johannes moved to Hillesheim, where Georg Conrad, who was from Gau-Odernheim originally, lived after his marriage the previous year. 9.
