CARLA POHL CURRICULUM VITAE

Carla Pohl was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and educated at the Pretoria Teacher s Training College and the University of Pretoria. At this time she also started private singing lessons with Anna Elizabeth Pohl. After her success in PACT s production of Il Trovatore, she was awarded the Mimi Coertze bursary in 1965, which not only enabled her to continue her studies at the Conservatoire in Wiesbaden, Germany, but also afforded her the opportunity to build an illustrious international singing career. Carla s first permanent engagement was at the opera house in Pforzheim, where she expanded her repertoire in Italian opera roles like Elisabetta in Don Carlo and Tosca. After five years in Pforzheim, Carla joined the Freiburg opera company (where she starred in German opera roles, such as Sieglinde in Die Walküre and Chrysothemis in Elektra) before returning to Wiesbaden, where she sang her first Wagner roles. In 1981, Carla was offered a contract at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, after which her international career took off. She has since appeared as guest artist in opera houses around the world from Europe, Russia and South America to Australia and South Africa including the Deutsche Oper and Staatsoper in Berlin, the Munich State Opera, Covent Garden in London, the Vienna State Opera, the Brisbane Opera House, the Teatro Municipal in Santiago de Chile, and the Bolshoi in Moscow. Carla Pohl has worked with many renowned conductors and is hailed by critics as one of the last true high dramatic sopranos of our time. She is well-known globally for her Richard Strauss and Wagner roles. Her opera repertoire includes many acclaimed dramatic soprano roles, like Turandot, Leonore in Fidelio, Amelia in Un Ballo in Maschera, Aida, Elektra, Ariadne in Ariadne auf Naxos, Salome, Die Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier, Die Färberin in Die Frau ohne Schatten, Elsa in Lohengrin, Leonora in La Forza del Destino, Elizabeth in Tannhäuser, Senta in Der fliegende Holländer, Isolde in Tristan und Isolde, Brünnhilde in Der Ring des Nibelungen, and Ortrud in Lohengrin. Carla also sang in numerous concerts in cities around the world, from the Finlandia Halle in Helsinki to the Theatre Des Champs Elysées in Paris, and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Since retiring from the opera stage, Carla has been performing her favourite repertoire: her beloved Brecht, Weill & Hollaender Lieder, chansons and songs from the twenties and thirties. After 35 years overseas she returned to South Africa in 1997, and currently lives in Johannesburg. Opera remains in her blood and to pass on her love and knowledge of music Carla Pohl has recently opened her own studio where she teaches and works with promising talent.

The South African period: up to 1966 In her own words: I will never forget the day that Erna Zack visited the Truida Kestell primary school in Bethlehem I was eight years old and her visit inspired me to join the school choir. Prior to that point, nobody even knew I could sing. My mother was always convinced I would become a concert pianist, as I taught myself how to play the piano when I was five. In 1949, I was signed up to compete at the Eisteddfod arts festival in Ficksburg, and won a gold diploma for singing in the under-9 category. When I was signed up for the under-15 s, on a whim, I won that too. I guess everyone realised I could sing after that! Another woman that greatly influenced and inspired my life and career, was my Pietersburg high school music teacher Nadia Sorour, and in 1965 (while I was a student in Pretoria) I won the Mimi Coertze bursary and this is where my overseas journey begins. I guess one negative of this period was that I was training as a mezzo-soprano, and all the time, I could feel that something wasn t quite right. It was almost as though I was darkening my voice unnaturally it would take a couple of years before I realised I was not meant to be a mezzo-soprano. Highlights: Gold Diploma for singing awarded at the Eisteddfod Arts Festival, held in Ficksburg on 15 October September 1958: Performances of the musical Die Minnesangeres by Pierre Malan (music) and C J Esterhuyse (dialogue). August & September 1966: Performances of Il Trovatore by Giuseppe Verdi, produced by TRUK and staged in Pretoria and Johannesburg. Carla in the role of Azucena. The first Wiesbaden period: 1967 to 1969 In her own words: When I started studying at the Conservatoire in Wiesbaden, I decided to make the switch over to singing soprano. Luckily, I found someone who showed me the right way the incredible Klara Barlow (who was the first soprano at the State Theatre in Wiesbaden) gave me the right exercises that ensured a smooth transition from mezzo to soprano. I was a penniless foreign student at that time and I think my entire wardrobe consisted of a couple of dresses, but fellow South African Wendy Fine was always at hand and gave me some lovely clothes. Thank you Klara and Wendy! Highlights: 28 January 1967: Carla s first concert with the opera school at the Wiesbaden Conservatory. Articles in the Wiesbadener Tageblatt and the Kurier.

November 1968: After various opera houses have enquired about her contractual availability, Carla accepts Pforzheim s offer this will be her first permanent engagement. 2 February 1969: Performance of clips from Der Wildschütz by Albert Lortzing, produced by the Opera School in Wiesbaden and staged for an opera matinée at the Kleines Haus. Carla in the role of The Countess. 22 June 1969: Carla s and other fellow students Farewell Concert at the Wiesbaden Conservatory. Articles in the Wiesbadener Tageblatt and the Kurier. Carla and Wolfgang Brendel sing the duet from Verdi s Il Trovatore. The Pforzheim period: 1969 to 1975 In her own words: Looking back, I am very thankful that I had those eight years of experience at a smaller opera house it gave my voice a chance to settle into a soprano voice and also gave me the opportunity to try out various different roles. In Pforzheim, I really did perform as a vast assortment of characters I began singing many of my important Italian roles and, of course, a lot of Mozart too. One of the performances I will never forget is the production of Die Hochzeit des Figaro in September of 1969, at the Pforzheim Stadttheater. This is where I sang my first dramatic soprano role, as The Gräfin. The world-famous lyric soprano Gundula Janowitz, who was the producer s wife, sat in on rehearsals every day. Despite her donning dark glasses and sitting in the back, we all knew who she was. Since The Gräfin was one of her signature roles, I was very nervous! Luckily, she never said a word. On a personal level this period of my life is also of great importance, as I married my second husband, tenor Michael Grabow, whom I still consider to have been not only my most significant critic, but also one of my best friends. The highlight during this time is the birth of our daughter Tatjana, on the 9 th of April 1973 she shares our love and passion for music and singing to this day.

The Freiburg/ Pforzheim period: 1975 to 1979 In her own words: In 1975, Michael got offered a permanent engagement at the Stadttheater Freiburg. So I stopped my contract in Pforzheim and joined him in Freiburg. I remember this being a very dark time for me I was bored and frustrated, and was very close to just packing my bags and taking my child back home to South Africa. But then, as I ve experienced so many times in my life, when you re really feeling down and out, something suddenly happens that changes everything I was sitting in our Freiburg apartment one day in 1976, when I got a very interesting call from Pforzheim Alexandra Kunošikova was ill and would I be able to take her place in Franz Lehár s Wo die Lerche singt (which, I need to mention, I had never performed before). I remember they called on a Friday and dress rehearsals were on the Monday. This would mean learning a new operetta in three days not only songs, but also lots of dialogue to memorise which is total madness! So of course I said yes. Give me an apartment, food and the tapes, I ll lock myself in, and I ll do it. From that performance onwards, I regularly commuted between Freiburg and Pforzheim, where I got another offer to sing Tosca, which was a huge success. During a guest showing of Tosca in Offenburg, Michael asked Klauspeter Seibel the Freiburg conductor to come and watch. After that, I promptly got offered a permanent contract in Freiburg. Düsseldorf was also already showing interest at that point, but I didn t feel ready for such a big theatre yet. The second Wiesbaden period: 1979 to 1981 In her own words: While Michael stayed in Essen to fulfil his contract, Tatjana and I moved to Wiesbaden, which is where and when I made a name for myself with my Tannhäuser and Fidelio performances. One day, the renowned Opera Director Grischa Barfuss came to Wiesbaden to listen to me I was made another offer to come to Düsseldorf and declined again. I think the idea of joining such a big opera house didn t yet feel right to me. Grischa was not one to give up easily though, and he managed to convince me to at least come to Düsseldorf for an audition I had to sing Andrea Chénier s Maddalena in it s original Italian (which was quite a challenge, as I was used to performing the part in German) and Tannhäuser s Elizabeth. Both occasions were proper trial-runs, with a full orchestra and audience, and they were quite the success. After that though, I had to audition for Barfuss one-to-one. Many people might not know this about me, but I have always dreaded auditions so, needless to say, it didn t go all that well. When he called me back inside, I was sure he would tell me to go back to Wiesbaden. That I wasn t Düsseldorf material (at that stage, the

Düsseldorfer/ Duisburger Rheinoper was of an international standard). Of course, being who I am, I took the bull by the horns and blurted out I sang terribly. If I were you I would never hire me based on how I sang today! Grischa laughed and said: What are you talking about? I called you back in to offer you a contract! For the first time in ages I was utterly speechless. That was the beginning of a fantastic working relationship, and more importantly a wonderful friendship. I was very sad when he left as Opera Director things at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein were never quite the same again after that. During this time, we lived in Eggerscheidt, while Michael had a contract in Essen. The hardest and most challenging thing that happened was that Michael lost his voice, due to medical complications. I tried everything to help him we went to countless experts and tried countless rehabilitation techniques but to no avail Michael was despondent. I stayed behind in Germany to further my career and to carry on making a living. It was a tough decision, and there were many times I just longed to be with my family on the farm I had bought in Donkerhoek, Pretoria. I did take on a semi-contract at the Pretoria Staatsteater, so I would at least be able to spend time with them now and then, sometimes even three months at a time.

I ended my permanent contract with Düsseldorf in 1988, but stayed on in a guest performance capacity. During this period I was singing a lot of highly dramatic roles. My last official concert and probably the highlight of my career was in 1997 in Berlin, with the Philharmonic Orchestra, and the last opera I ever performed was Die Götterdämmerung in Essen, also in I then returned to South Africa to be with my family, but carried on singing in Johannesburg, as well as internationally.
