Introduction DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE TEL: Ext FAX: CHAIRPERSON: Tay-Sheng Jeng The Department of Architecture in National Cheng Kung University was established in 1944, one of the first five departments of the university. It is also the first architecture school at college level in Taiwan. Top quality teaching and research has always been the Department s key concern. The development of Masters and PhD programs, respectively in 1968 and 1991, was responsive to the need of the industry, society and to the need of upgrading the Department s capacity to contribute to this field. Since its establishment the Department has contributed significantly to the training of architectural profession, to the advancement of knowledge, and to the improvement of Taiwan s building industry and urban environment. The Department values the breadth and multi-disciplinarity inherent in architectural education and strives to provide top quality facilities, environment, and programs to support creative, critical learning and innovative, relevant research. The forming of a new College of Planning and Design in the university since 003 is in line with our philosophy and help enhance cross- departmental collaboration in teaching and research. Undergraduate courses provide a sound and balanced fundamental training that students can be equipped to enter their later architectural career. A five year architectural program and a four building science program are offered since 009. The Graduate School provides a wide range of study fields that Master students can take to advance their professional understanding and skills or to prepare themselves for a higher/research degree. The PhD program offers a setting that students can develop their potential for academic study and complete their research projects. Over sixty years of development, accumulation, growth and changes, the Department not only trained outstanding professionals in this field, established an atmosphere of study and striving for excellence, but also developed in different stages new perspectives for teaching and research. Our current and short-term goal is to sustain its teaching and research quality and to strive to be one of the best architectural schools in Asia, through internal reforms and international links and cooperation. 1
The Department accepts 60 students to the undergraduate course and 70 to Masters, 0 to PhD annually. Its current population is around 600, serviced by 7 full-time faculty members and part-time faculty members.

Pedagogical Philosophy The central theme of our educational programs is first to broaden students' views and deepen their understanding about the natures of our living environments, and secondly, on the basis of such views and understandings to equip them with profound knowledge and professional skills to intervene. The common base we can share is our commitment to cultivation of the mind and the heart of our students in the framework of values that is humanistically, socially, and environmentally responsible Through carefully structured courses, students will intellectually advance not only their domain knowledge but also their analytical, organizational, and imaginary capabilities that are the fundamentals to their future developments in design and design-based research fields. The undergraduate program is mainly focusing on the liberal education along with basic professional training. To achieve this goal, the mandatory core courses are reduced to the extent that will provide students with entry level practice competence and background knowledge for advanced studies. The elective program is expanded to allow some concentration of study in certain area for the development of special interests. The diversity of working approaches and positions in the department makes possible a variety of career developments and academic programs. The most shared value in the graduate programs is to develop attitudes of responsibility for leadership in each disciplinary field, and the attitudes that will lead to the advancement of knowledge and the professional arts. The academic program that offers research training (mainly through PhD program) for those who have shown great potentials to make substantially original contribution to the subject concerned is also developed to encourage and require critical judgment and self-motivation 7
Research Groups & Labs Research Groups Our faculty members work mainly independently regarding teaching and research. However, six research groups are loosely formed, providing related courses and fields for research. Cross group collaboration in teaching and research is under development. Design Theory and Computing Group The group provides training for advanced understanding of design theory, aiming at cultivating students' creative ability and promoting the ability of independent thinking for design research. Its teaching emphasizes integration of real work/ operation with design theory and provides rich opportunities of international cooperation. CAAD and media study in this group provides not only powerful tools but means for theoretical and technical breakthrough for design. Architectural and Environmental Planning Group The group welcomes students from different backgrounds that are interested in urban design and related studies. It provides courses regarding theory, methods and history, in conjunction with practicals and specialized studies. The training focuses on the building of students ability for environment analysis, professional communication, and project evaluation. Both teaching and research concern theoretical reasoning and real-world situations. Architecture History and Conservation Group The focus of its curriculum is as follows: (1) nurturing professional researchers in all types of architecture history and theory; () strengthening architects' professional knowledge of reutilizing and maintaining historical architecture. Building Structure Group The group provides advanced knowledge in building structure, aiming at nurturing students' independent ability in research. The goal of the curriculum is to equip architects with sound knowledge base for structural engineering and engineers with fundamental knowledge and design skill of architecture. 8
Architectural Engineering Group The research focus of this group is building construction and management. The group pays close attention to the use of building materials, construction techniques, and financial analysis of development etc. The courses it provides aim to equip students with sound construction knowledge responsive to the industry s current need and developing trend. Architectural environmental Programming and Control Group The research area in this group includes analysis of single and multiple physical factor; it also involves collation of environmental control and architectural construction, and the research topic on the affection of the improved environmental control to the development of permanent architecture. The research area includes environment of ecology, sound, light and heat, air, and water, etc.; combining with physics, biology and chemistry, psychology and architecture to establish a plan, design, structure, and material to maintain research in the related field. Restructuring the undergraduate curriculum to assurethe objectives of the liberal education.. Strengthening graduate courses to offer high quality professional training. 3. Improving design training and promoting design exhibitions 4. Encouraging research and academic publications. 5. Promoting interdisciplinary cooperation at national and international levels. 6. Strengthening alumni relations and promoting alumni fund to assist activities such as: a. setting up lecture chairs in many research areas; b. publishing academicals journals; and c. organizing international conferences and design exhibitions 10
Degree Programs The department offers two programs for undergraduate studies: the five-year architecture program and the four-year building science program starting 009. The former requires students to take 160 credits, while the latter 141. Both programs consist of courses of fundamental humanity, architectural design, architectural history and theory, fundamentals of planning, environment control, and structure and building technology. Architecture program require five year, 45 credits of architectural design and related courses while building science program require three architectural design training. The former is provided with more social science courses while the latter engineering ones. Higher Degree programs offered by the department include the Masters and the PhDs. For the Master program 36 minimum credits are required, including 6 credits of thesis study. For the PhD program 4 minimum credits are required, including also 6 credits of thesis study. Our PhD program regulates also requirement of comprehension of at least one foreign language and the publications of research papers in acknowledged journals before thesis submission. The Department of Architecture focuses on the study and design of the human environment -- architectural and urban. Graduates of the school pursue careers in architectural design and teaching. The department offers three degree programs: Bachelor of Science in Architecture (4 Years) Bachelor of Architecture (5 Years) Master of Science in Architecture Ph.D. in Architecture 11
