2 O V E R V I E W O F S K I L L S E T // G U I D E T O P R O J E C T S A R C H I T E C T U R A L A P T I T U D E // T Y P E S O F P R O J E C T S Connecting urban «nodes», developing a walkable city, defining successful public space DRAFTING & Working at the level of an individual building, drawing details in Revit and ArchiCAD, collaborating with engineers Working within and around the perameters of a historic building Expressing a buisiness concept in architectural terms and connecting it to the urban context Developing a program for and designing public space for specific functions (library, school) while considering the consequences at the urban scale Working with the client to define their goals and following up with the execution «NON-SPACE» Designing around infrastructure in forgotton urban spaces which can be revitalized to become something which contributes to the community HIGH DENSITY Assessing the urban space and developing a program which will fit a variety of necessities of city life within a highrise FREE TIME ART Artwork I have done in my free time E L E M E N T S T H A T I N F O R M E D T H E P R O J E C T S // S K I L L S E T D E V E L O P E D STRUCTURE & DRAFTING These are projects where collaboration with engineers and drafting in Revit or ArchiCAD was particularly relevant to the final design and project development. PERMIT REQUEST While in Geneva I had to request and receive building permits for the houses I worked on. This included any modifications to proposed designs throughout the project. CONSTRUCTION SITE MANAGEMENT On-site experience has been my main focus for some projects: designing the building, requesting bids and coordinating teams are essential to realize the final design. CLIENT RELATIONS Maintaining an outstanding relationship with clients through regular contact and collaboration has contributed to the success of these projects. LIMITATIONS ON SCALE VS MATERIALITY Through studying different materials one discovers its limits at each given scale. This was particularly the case working with wooden gridshells. ACCESSIBILITY Consideration to access through mapping out the car, foot and public transport, as well as access for delivery vehicles was an essential component to these projects. NATURE & SUSTAINABILITY Not just designing sustainably, maximizing a site s natural assets, but also working within natural constraints, ex.: rising water level and preserving native species. EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE Overpasses, bridges and retaining walls provided a unique opportunity for unused spaces to become part of urban life. HISTORICAL SITE Working with and around sites which hold significant value to the local tradition. Incorporating them both physically and visually required careful research and consideration. PUBLIC VERSUS PRIVATE SPACE Circulation and programming are essential components in designing how the public and private space connect in a meaningful way.
3 12/2011 SINGLE-FAMILY HOME NEW BUILD Mies, Switzerland Work Experience This house was one of several I collaborated on while working for Andrés Ojeda Architects. My role was to help with the overall execution with a focus on the drafting, permit requests, managing contractor bids, interior design, weekly site meetings and regular interaction with the client. 05/2012 SINGLE-FAMILY HOME NEW BUILD Bassins, Switzerland Work Experience This house was the second completed new-build I worked on for Andrés Ojeda Architects. Like the first house, my role was to help with the overall execution with a focus drafting plans, permit requests, managing contractor bids, interior design, weekly site meetings and regular interaction with the client. 01/2013 SWISS DETAILING Bern, Switzerland Academic Experience These drawings were done for a Swiss Detailing Class as part of my MArch program. Each week we were given an image of part of a building and were asked to draw the details. 4 06/2013 1:1 CONSTRUCTION STUDENT PROJECT London, United Kingdom During the first part of my BArch degree at the University of East London I researched how to construct gridshells with specific attention to building a 1:1 model and learning about the limitations of the structure relative to its material. The proposed structure is to be used in the architecture studio to divide teacher-led crit space from the rest of the class and the busy corridor. 06/2013 GRIDSHELL WORKSHOP BArch FINAL PROJECT Espoo, Finland The proposed building is a gridshell which will primarily serve as a workshop for Metla, a company focused on research in wood construction, and students at the Alvar Aalto University. With an open floorplan free of structural elements thanks to the gridshell form, this allows for the employees to have the freedom of space within their workshop. The building s design is rooted in local traditional structures called Laavu which respond to the harsh northern climate. 01/2014 // // HIGHRISE Berlin, Germany Located on the site of the Berlin Wall, this project looks at how to densify in an urban space formally part of communist East Germany. The project site lies on the Spree in Berlin, Germany. The proposal is three towers with heavy consideration given to communal points of interaction. The tower s forms create a public space at ground level and direct the pedestrian towards the common space. The far left tower s foundation is in the river, a reference to the Berlin Wall which once occupied the site. HIGH-DENSITY
5 05/2014 LIBRARY // // URBAN STUDIO Paris, France This project based in the zone of the Gare du Nord in Paris consists of multiple urban studies, looking at the juncitons of users on foot and by car to determine the most impactful site to propose dense housing and a library. Located in an unused plot next to abandoned rail lines, the site is located centrally in Paris and offers an opportunity to propose much-needed affordable housing and community services. «NON-SPACE» HIGH-DENSITY 07/2014 AP KOTOR SUMMER SCHOOL // PERFORMING ARTS CENTER Kotor, Montenegro KotorAPSS - The Architecture Prison Summer School, is a summer workshop put together to redefine the approach on urban planning and design in the region. Kotor is a UNESCO site on the coast of Adriatic sea.this portion of the workshop focused on locating ways to sustainably develop tourism in the city using pre-existing buildings. My focus was on a theater with accommodations for visiting artists. «NON-SPACE» 05/2015 HOSPITALITY SCHOOL // STUDIO Niksic, Montenegro This project is a reconstruction of a portion of Montenegro s Dom Revolucije, a monument to Socialist revolution that has lain unfinished and derelict for almost 30 years. The Modernist building would be converted into a usable structure for the city s residents. My proposal is a hospitality school which would work into the local economy through providing hospitality training and a low-cost hotel for tourists. As an emerging European economy, there is a demand for tourism to Montenegro but the infrastructure for tourism is presently lacking. This re-use project proposes a new solution. NON-SPACE
6 01/2016 MArch FINAL PROJECT URBAN RENEWAL THESIS PROJECT Ventimiglia, Italy Modern-day Ventimiglia is mish-mash of old buildings, new infrastructure and abundant natural beauty, all with many forgotten spaces in-between. This project attempts to seamlessly link the infrastructural, natural and urban elements while simultaneously offering the city what it needs: points of density which contribute to the city s socio-economic well-being. The proposal consists of a river walk, kiosks, and a new market located at the heart of infrastructural junctions. NON-SPACE 06/2008 INDUSTRIAL DESIGN // INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE Davis, California s During my BS degree in Environmental Design I focused on Interior Architecture. The cousework covered this and industrial design with respect to lighting and funiture. Sustainability was key throughout the projects.the project shown at the right was an introduction to furniture design project where we were asked to create a cardboard chair that could be folded up, compressed and shipped easily. Using the vertical strength of the cardboard material, I was able to create a light-weight yet strong chair ON FREE-TIME PROJECTS In my free time I enjoy creating works of art through sketching and painting with acrylics and watercolor.
