3 BUILDING FORM ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION The Bridge?-Stone House is located on a large lot of.87 acres at 23 Fairbank Street near its intersection with Oak Hill Road. The center chimney house has a slightly irregular facade of three bays and its lateral wall arrangement into two symmetrical bays suggests two tiers of rooms within. Traditionally, houses of this exterior form enclose a plan of central lobby entry flanked by a hall and a parlor in the front, a central kitchen flanked by small sevice spaces in the rear. The house is covered in clapboard with 6/9 sash and plain trim except at its central entry. This entry is covered by an enclosed, gable-roofed porch, l i t on the side walls, and trimmed by Doric pillasters and entablature supporting a full pediment. A two-story wing of two bays in width extends to the right of the main block, and beyond the ell a shedroofed woodshed connects the house to a large shingled English barn, entered through a central barn door; a two-car garage extends from the end of the barn. The property may also have an archaeological site associated with i t, as map evidence suggests that a shop was formerly located on the north or Oak Hill Road side of the lot. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE The Bridge?-Stone House appears from external evidence to date to the 18th century. The house first appears on the 1813 map, marked "J. Bridge." Jeremiah Bridge came to Harvard in the 1760s from Lexington, and served the town during the Revolution, in the militia and the Continental Army; perhaps Bridge survived long enough to be listed in 1831, but i t is likely to be a kinsman. The property is said to have been next owned by Deacon Isaac N. Stone, who served the Evangelical Congregational Church from 1847 until 1863 when he left Harvard for Groton. Stone was involved in Harvard's stone cutting industry, operating a shop for sawing stone on Bowers Brook. A stone-cutter's shop survived to be recorded on the 1870 map when the property was owned by Daniel Hartwell, and a similarly located outbuilding is noted in 1898 as well, when the property was owned by J. Farnsworth. Later owners of the property included Emma Kinsman (1907) and Francis Wallett.
