Two indigenous (Quechua) boys who were walking home (2 hours) from their Saturday high school lessons went 1.5 hours out of their way to help her. She was touched by their gracious help and their passion when they spoke about the importance of education. Pam didn t realize that the gentle yet strong Kichwa (Quechua) spirit was about to change the direction of her life. Since she first happened upon this community high in the Andes, Pam has worked to improve the quality of life for the Kichwa by working collaboratively with Rotary and Engineers Without Borders. Together they provide philanthropic aide to its people Two new schools, a shower facility, composting toilets and water infrastructure are among the projects she helped begin there. In fact, 95% of the contiguous villages now have

At Thursday s meeting Pam will give an overview of her work in Malingua Pamba and the value of the Global Grant submitted to Rotary International to partner on this water and sanitation project. Alan Ashbaugh, President of the Rotary Club of Fort Collins ( ) and District 5440 Grants Committee member, will introduce Pam and share how Clubs in District 5440 and 5450 can combine dollars to do incredible work in the world. Alan helped plan and implement seven Matching Rotary Grants, all in Central America. He will describe how he supports Pam s efforts and plans for additional international Rotary projects. The Rotarian of the Year, Distinguished Service Award, and Spirit Award recipients will be announced. The evening begins with cocktails at 5:30, followed by a 3 entrée buffet dinner at 6:00 in the Theater at the Other Side where we have our noon meetings. The Barleens, Barbara and Brenda, and George of the Rocky Mountain Opry will perform again this year after the recognition event has concluded. 4 Claudine Perrault has completed her two year term as Director of International Service, and has elected not to serve the one year term as President Elect. She has agreed to undertake the duties of planning club meeting programs until a club member is selected to serve the term of President Elect. Jill and Claudine have made important contributions to the Club Board during their terms. Their participation on the Club Board will be missed. We wish them every future success as they devote their attention to their demanding careers and the care of their families. Pete Sumey President Thor Homme rides for MS Posted by Brad Rosenbaum Once again our own Thor Homme will be riding his bike to raise funds for Multiple Sclerosis. 6 Meeting Notes The meeting was called to order by President Pete Sumey. The invocation was offered by Mark Richards. For Flag Day, Dick Broman led us in singing You re A Grand Old Flag followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Bryon Holmes led the guest introductions. Rita duchateau introduced her husband Phil. Ron Gordon s guest was Les Foiles. Madison Casey introduced two guests Larry Shriver the brother of today s speaker from Baton Rouge, LA and Madison s wife Marty. Sarah Walsh was proud to introduce her daughter Clothilde. Bert Bergland introduced his wife Marti. We sang the Welcome Song. Jess Nielsen presented our club with a flag from his home town Rotary club in North Platte, Nebraska. Announcements: Raffle Jim Robertson reported the pot is up to $350. Golf Tournament is tomorrow, Bruce Carmichael said. We have a few open slots to play and there are `14 teams. Big thanks to Ron Gordon and Jay Harroff for rounding up $10,000 in sponsorships! Bruce named the top two sponsor categories. He needs some volunteers to fill cancellations. Golf Ball Drop tickets can be purchased from Bert Bergland. Bob Brunson said the Farmers Market got off to a good start today. He thanked Rebecca for helping today. Don Widrig is booking volunteers to work the Coolest Car Show on July 4 in Bond Park. Many are needed. The Estes Park Museum Friends pays our club $2,000 to do this. Tara Moenning read to very nice thank yous from our scholarship recipients Ian McLane who will attend School of Mines and Tiffany England who just graduated from CSU. Dana Fritz invited everyone to President s Night Changing of the Guard Thursday June 27 at 5:30 for drinks and 6:00 for dinner. The Barleen s Rocky Mountain Opry will entertain. Pete reported that our French student, Faustine is on a bus tour of the western US. She will be in Estes until July 5 and folks are needed to entertain her on any day between June 21 and July 5.
7 Rotarians of Note Pete rang the bell for the audio-visual team in the back booth Dave Evans, Don Widrig, Bob Brunson, Mark Richards. Rita duchateau gave her new member biography and we welcomed her to blue badge status! Happy Money Among others there was: Dennis McHenry presented a check to our Foundation s endowment in gratitude for all of those who helped him during his recovery from knee replacement. Jack Vaughan was grateful to have missed the tornado in Norman and Moore, OK where he used to live. Ward Nelson was remembering his father on his birthday and happy for all his father had done for him. Bob Brunson was just plain happy. Robert Ludlum was happy that Bob Brunson was old enough to make him feel young. Program: Astronaut (and new Estes Park resident) Loren Shriver narrated a video of the Space Shuttle mission he commanded that deployed the Hubble Telescope. It was a fascinating program.
