Richard Bedford Bennett, 1st Viscount Bennett He was born on 3 July 1870 in Hopewell Hill, New Brunswick and grew up in nearby Hopewell Cape. He attended law school at Dalhousie University in 1890 and graduated in He then worked as a lawyer in Chatham, N.B. Max Aitken was his office boy. He moved to Calgary in 1897 to work with Sir James Lougheed. He was first elected to the Northwest Territories Government for Calgary East in 1898 through to the general election of He resigned his seat to run in the Federal Election in 1901, lost that election and won the by-election in 1901 to replace himself. He was elected in 1911 to represent Calgary in the Federal Parliament but did not run in He ran in the 1925 election and was briefly the Minister of Finance in Meighan s government. After Meighan s defeat, he became the leader of the Conservative Government. He became the 11 th Prime Minister of Canada from 07 August 1930 to 23 October 1935, the heart of the Great Depression. After being defeated in 1935, he moved to England in 1938 and died there on 26 June He is the only Canadian Prime Minister not buried in Canada. He was elevated to the peerage as Viscount Bennett in Being a bachelor, he had no heirs and thus the Viscountcy became extinct on his death. He was the Honorary Colonel of The Calgary Highlanders from the year of their designation as such in 1921 to his death in He was a controlling owner of the E.B. Eddy match company, which was the largest safety match manufacturer in Canada, and he was one of the richest Canadians at that time. 3

Died: 05 September 1920 at Eastbourne (south coast of England) She was brought up in Jamaica and England. She came to Canada with her mother to live with her brother. It was through her brother, Hewitt, that she met the Canadian politician, Sir John A. Macdonald. They would marry on February 16, Canada's first "First Lady" was intelligent and curious about life but she had little patience for the social graces and duties of the wife of a Canadian Prime Minister. In 1886, following the completion of the Canadian pacific Railway the Macdonald's set off on a transcontinental rail trip. Consumed by the beauty of the Canadian Rockies, the 50 year old woman raised concerns from the crew when she enjoyed part of the trip wrapped in blankets and perched atop a candle box on the locomotive's cow catcher! The diaries she wrote, now preserved in Canada's National Archives, provide a fascinating view of the early years of Canadian Confederation. 7

This badge consists of a white shield with a red left hand in the centre, surmounted by a crown, all within a blue border variously decorated with roses for Baronets of England, with shamrocks for Baronets of Ireland, with roses and thistles for Baronets of Great Britain, and with roses, thistles and shamrocks for Baronets of the United Kingdom. It is worn round the neck from a 1 3/4" RIBBON of yellow with dark blue edges (1/4"). The ribbon is not worn in undress and the Badge is not worn in miniature. The post-nominal letters Bt can be used after the person s name. Although not knighted, they are entitled to be called 'Sir' and the eldest son inherits the Baronetcy. Thomas Williams of Royal Artillery, who died in 1807, was at one time Commissary General and Barrack Master at Halifax, Nova Scotia. He married Maria Walker, the daughter of Captain Thomas Walker and left a family consisting of five daughters and two sons. Of these, the elder, Lt. Thomas G.T. Williams entered the Royal Artillery, served under the Duke of Wellington in Spain and France and died after the battle of New Orleans in Sir Fenwick Williams was born at Annapolis, N.S. 04 December 1800 and at an early age obtained, through the influence of the Commander-in-Chief of British North America, Edward Duke of Kent (father of Queen Victoria) an appointment to the Royal Military Academy at Woodwich. Having passed with credit through the prescribed course of study young Williams was gazetted in 1825, 2nd Lt. in the Royal Artillery, became 1st Lt. in 1827 and was soon sent on special service to Ceylon where he remained during nine years of active and constant labor. In 1840 he was promoted to captaincy and rendered military service in Turkey where he acted as instructor in military practice to the Turkish army and was soon made brevet major. In 1843 he was commissioned by the Earl of Aberdeen, then Secretary of Foreign Affairs, to act as a commissioner, along with the British ministers in Turkey and Persia, to settle the disputed between those countries. In this service he spent no less than nine years, four of which were passed under a canvas tent and suffered severely in health from the fevers characteristic of that wild region. One incidental result of the appointment was the facilitating of the discoveries of Layard, Loftus and Rawlinson in Mesopotamia and ancient Assyria. During the progress of this task, Major Williams took a prominent part in the Conference at Erzaroum, May 1847 which resulted in a treaty signed by the representatives of England, Turkey and Persia and he was at that time promoted to the rank of Lt. Col. The task was still incomplete when in July, 1854, war having been declared between Russia and Turkey, Col. Williams was selected by Lord Clarendon as British Commissioner at the Turkish headquarters with the rank of Brigadier General The heroism which he displayed during the memorial seige of Kars Forced by famine to surrender to the beseiging army, General Williams was treated with honour by General Mouravioff and returned to England through St. Petersburg. On the news of the victory of Sept. 29th, the British Cabinet had gazetted General Williams a Knight Commander of the Bath and the Sultan had honoured him with the Order of Medijidie and the rank of Mushir or full General in the Turkish service. On reaching England, Sir W.F. Williams was rewarded with the baronetcy, made a major-general, the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor, a pension of 1000 per annum, the freedom of the City of London, Doctorate of Laws from the University of Oxford. In July 1856 he was elected to Parliament for Caine in Liberal interest and again at general election of March 1857, but he had no fondness for Parliamentary life and retired in 1859 upon assuming the command of the post at Woolwich where he had been educated. During the same year he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the forces in Canada and held the post throughout the American Civil War until In August 1870 he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of Gibraltar and filled that position until He then returned to England. 20

In 1928 the death of her daughter Mona Dunn from his first marriage sent him into a state of depression and for a time he thought about cutting back on his business and his return to his native New Brunswick. However, in 1929, his new wife gave birth to a daughter, Anne, who raised his spirits much. Anne Dunn grew up to be an artist, studying under Henry Moore and Paris, France with Fernand Léger and at the Académie Julian. However, Dunn and his second wife divorced in 1942 after which he married his longtime personal secretary, Marcia Anastasia Christoforides. Although 36 years his junior, "Christofor" as she was nicknamed, was very clear, very loyal and dedicated partner. James Dunn sought her input on most every business deal for the rest of his life. 30 K N I G H T B A C H E L O R In the British Empire (Commonwealth), a Knighthood is a dignity conferred by the sovereign entitling the possessor to have the title 'Sir' prefixed to his Christian name but is not a hereditary title such as the dignity of a baronet. The post-nominal initials Kt. are also used after the persons surname to distinguish them from a baronet who uses the postnominal initials Bt. Knight Bachelors are not attached to any Order but are members of the ancient concept of knighthood and chivalry expressed in Chaucer's 'chivalrie, trouthe, honour and curtesie'. Every person who is appointed to be a Knight Companion of the Order of the Garter or Thistle, or a Knight Grand Cross/Knight Commander of the Bath, of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, of the Royal Victorian Order or of the Order of the British Empire is first dubbed as a Knight Bachelor before being invested with the appropriate insignia of the order to which he has been appointed. When invested as a Knight Bachelor, the knight-elect moves forward after his name is announced by the Home Secretary and kneels on the knighting-stool in front of the Sovereign. The Sovereign then lays the blade of the sword first on his right and then on his left shoulder but no words are spoken during this operation. The new Knight then stands up, steps to the side of the stool and the Sovereign then shakes hands with him. The Sovereign presents no insignia to the new Knight Bachelor. However, The Imperial Society of Knights Bachelor was founded in 1908, and in 1926 King George V granted permission for them to obtain (at their own expense) a badge, which was to be worn on the left side of the coat. The badge was an oval silver gilt plaque 76 mm high by 56 mm wide (reduced in 1933 to 63 x 47 mm). On a background of red enamel, within an ornamental scroll border, is a cross hilted sword, belted and sheathed, point downwards, between two spurs, rowels uppermost. In 1973, the Queen authorized a new badge of similar design but without the elaborate borders, 48 mm x 32 mm to be worn at the neck from vermilion ribbon with gold edges. A person receiving an order would not wear the Knight Bachelor badge but would instead wear the appropriate badge of the order. A miniature of the Knight Bachelor's badge may now be worn on formal occasion when miniatures are appropriate. A Knighthood conferred by the Order of the Bath, Order of St. Michael & St. George, Royal Victorian Order or the Order of the British Empire takes precedence over a Knight Bachelor. 75 O R D E R S W H I C H C O N F E R K N I G H T H O O D THE MOST NOBLE ORDER OF THE GARTER United Kingdom (KG) This premier Order of Chivalry was probably founded in The Order has one class and consists of the Sovereign, the Prince of Wales, Royal Knights Companions (such as the Duke of Edinburgh) and 25 Knight Companions. In addition, there are extra Knights and Ladies of the Garter usually representing foreign royalty. Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother is a Lady of the Garter. There are also six officers of the Order and the Military Knights of Windsor (Milites Pauperes). The latter are twelve retired army officers including their Governor who represent the Knights when they are absent. The Order has nine insignia, which are awarded in the following order: a) THE GARTER: Of dark blue velvet with gold embroidery with the motto 'Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense ' (Evil be who evil thinks) which is placed by two Knights on the left leg below the knee of a new Knight (on the left arm above the elbow for a Lady of the Garter); b) THE RIBAND and THE LESSER GEORGE: The four inch wide dark blue RIBAND (or sash) is worn over the left shoulder with the Lesser George (a gold badge with the figure of St. George fighting the dragon and encircled by an oval garter bearing the motto) hung from it on the left hip. Both are presented after the garter at the investiture; c) THE MANTLE: Made of blue velvet lined with taffeta and bearing the red cross of St. George on a white shield encircled by the garter on the left shoulder is placed next on the new Knight; d) THE COLLAR and GEORGE: The collar is made of gold and consists of 24 linked red roses each rose within a representation of the Garter and from which is hung the George (a representation of St. George slaying the dragon made from gold and enamels, a three-dimensional figure). 76 e) A HOOD (of crimson velvet), a SURCOAT (of crimson velvet and lined with white taffeta), a HAT (of black velvet, lined with white taffeta, and fastened with a band of diamonds, a plume of white ostrich and black heron's feathers) and the STAR (of chipped silver is an eight-pointed star with the red cross of St. George in the centre surrounded by the garter in blue, outlined in gold, with the motto in the centre) make up the rest of the insignia of the order but are not presented at the ceremony. The Lessor George, Riband and Star are the insignia most commonly worn by the Queen, Prince Philip and the Prince of Wales. The other insignia are only worn on special occasions such as investitures and collar days. The collar day for the Order of the Garter is 23 April, St. George's day, although the collar could also be worn on the other 22 collar days during the year. Saint George's Chapel, Windsor is the spiritual home of the Order and the names of the Knights are placed on stall-plates in the Chapel. The banners of the current Knights hang in the chapel as well. No Canadians have been made a Knight of the Garter but the Duke of Connaught (right) while Governor-General of Canada ( ) was a Knight of the Garter. Five other Governor-Generals of Canada have also been Knights of the Garter. The most recent Governor General to be a KG was Field Marshal the Right Honourable Harold Rupert Leofric George, Viscount Alexander of Tunis, KG, GCB, GCMG, CSI, DSO, MC who was made a Knight of the Garter on 3 December 1946 along with Lord Mountbatten, Viscount Montgomery of Alamein and Lord Alanbrooke for their services in World War Two. The Queen Mother was a Lady of the Order and there are extra Knights and Ladies usually representing foreign royalty. There are four Officers of the Order. The Chapel of the Order is in Saint Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh and the Anniversary Day (collar day) of the Order is the 30th November (Saint Andrew's Day). The insignia of the Order is as follows: a) The MANTLE: Of green velvet bound with taffeta and tied with tasseled cordons of green and gold and having on its left side a figure of Saint Andrew bearing his cross, surrounded by a circlet of gold bearing the motto of the order, 'Nemo me impune lacessit' (No-one provokes me with impunity); b) The COLLAR: Of gold made in the form of alternate thistles and sprigs of rue, enameled in proper colours; c) The BADGE (or Jewel): Pendent from the collar is the badge, a golden image of Saint Andrew in green gown and purple surcoat, bearing before him the cross, enameled in white, the whole surrounded by rays of gold; d) The STAR: In silver in the shape of Saint Andrew's cross, with other rays issuing between the points of the cross, and in the centre, on a gold background, a thistle enameled in proper colours surrounded by a green circle bearing the motto'; e) The RIBAND: In dark green, worn in a similar manner to the Order of the Garter; f) A plain GOLD BADGE: Worn with the riband and consisting of a gold oval band within which is the motto of the order and in the centre, the figure of St. Andrew with his cross. In 1921 when most of Ireland became and independent Irish Free State, the Order was suspended. The Queen remains the Sovereign of the Order and there is one officer, the Ulster King of Arms (now combined with the Norroy King of Arms). St. Patrick is the patron and the motto is Wuis separabit (Who will separate us). There was a maximum of 22 knights. That last knight was created in 1936 with the last surviving Knight being Prince Henry, the Duke of Gloucester, who died in The Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (a position held by Viscount Pirrie) served as the Grand Master of the Order. Until 1886, the Archbishop of Dublin served as the Chancellor and he was replaced by the Chief Secretary for Ireland until 1921 when the position was vacated. Only members of the peerage or princes were appointed and there were no females appointed. a) The MANTLE: A celestial blue robe lined with white silk. The star of the Order is on the left of the mantle and a blue hood is attached. The hat of the Order was black velvet plumed with three fall of feathers, one red, one white and one blue. b) The COLLAR: Of gold consisting of Tudor roses and harps attached with knots. The two roses area alternately enameled white within red and red within white. The central harp is surmounted by a crown; c) The BADGE (or Jewel): Pendent from the collar is the badge, made of with a shamrock bearing three crowns, on top of a cross of St. Patrick and surrounded by a blue circle bearing the motto in majusclues, as well as the date of the Order s foundation in Roman numbers ( MDCCLXXXIII ); d) The STAR: An eight-pointed figure, with the four cardinal points longer than the intermediate points. Each point was shown as a cluster of rays. In the centre is the motto, year and design that appear on the bade. It originally had one class only (Companions) but in 1886 was extended to three classes: Knight Grand Commander (GCIE); Knight Commander (KCIE) and; Companion (CIE) The Order was discontinued in 1947 when India was granted independence. The BADGE of a Companion consists of a gold, five-petalled rose, enamelled crimson and with a green barb between each petal. The centre has an effigy of Queen Victoria on a gold ground surrounded by a purple ribbon edged and lettered gold, bearing the motto IMPERATRICIS AUSPICIIS (Under the auspices of the Empress). 82 O R D E R S W H I C H C O N F E R K N I G H T H O O D THE MOST EXALTED ORDER OF THE STAR OF INDIA (GCSI / KCSI / CSI) This Order was created in 1861 by Queen Victoria to honour Princes or Chiefs of India, or British subjects for loyal services rendered to the Indian Empire. It had three classes: Knight Grand Commander (GCSI), Knight Commander (KCSI) and, Companions (CSI). The Order was discontinued in 1947 with the independence of India. The Medal was worn after this date but with no new awards after 1947, it has now ceased to be seen. The motto of the Order is "Heaven Light Our Guide". The term Knight Grand Commander was used rather than Knight Grand Cross as the order was given to those not of the Christian faith such a Hindus and Muslims and the term Cross may have been offensive. GCSI: Made up of 36 members, 18 Indian and 18 British, the insignia include a Gold collar made up of lotus flowers, palm branches and joined by red and white roses. The badge is an onyx cameo bearing the effigy of Queen Victoria, set in a gold, ornamental oval containing the motto of the Order in diamonds, on a pale blue ground. The oval is surmounted by a star in chased silver and the entire badge hangs from the centre of the collar which is a Royal crown. The breast Star consists of golden rays issuing from a centre. The centre has a 5-point diamond star resting on a circular ribbon of light blue enamel bearing the motto in diamonds. A Mantle of light blue satin with a representation of the star on the left side, and tied with a white silk cord with blue and silver tassels makes up the formal insignia. When worn without the collar, the badge is worn on the left hip from a 50 mm wide Sash of pale blue edged in white which passes over the right shoulder. KCSI: Made up of 85 members, the Badge is worn round the neck from a ribbon 38 mm wide and the Star is the same as the GCSI but in silver rather than gold. CSI: Made up of 170 members, the Badge is worn round the neck from a 38 mm wide ribbon.
