1 Annual Report Exceeding, not retreating in tough economic times Kristi House, Inc. Orlowitz-Lee Children s Advocacy Center

2 The Year in Review Kristi House withstood the beginning of the country s most severe economic downturn since the Great Depression without cutting services to the children and families we serve. We did not have to turn anyone away largely due to the continued support of our donors and private funders who didn t turn their backs on us during our mutual time of trouble. These volunteers and supporters Breaking the Silence We salute our Breaking the Silence fiveyear pledge donors who are helping to build sustainability as we strive to protect all children in Miami-Dade. While Kristi House saw the deepest funding cuts in the public arena, we were able to expand our services and increase the number of clients in several key areas. We continued our third year of satellite office expansion to meet the growing need for space to provide therapy and other specialized services. This was enabled by local and national funders. Therapy has been an area of focused growth over the past several years as it is critical for helping most children overcome the trauma of abuse. The goal was to be able to provide therapy directly to more of the children served in case coordination each year, and not have to refer them to other providers who do not specialize in child sexual abuse treatment. As a result of satellite locations, additional staff, and the support of foundations and private donors, the number of children served in therapy surpassed 400 cases this year, up from 95 new clients in Perhaps most significant during this year of unprecedented financial challenge, our work to address the needs of all child sexual abuse victims through our commercial sexual exploitation of children program was recognized by the National Children s Alliance as one of three Urban Initiatives in the country. This distinction brought with it funding for a pilot year of intervention, community collaboration, and prevention and outreach programs to a high-risk, misunderstood and misidentified population of child victims. Our CSEC program opened its drop-in center, adopted a client-centered name (Project GOLD-Girls Owning and Living their Dreams), and logged 64 adolescent girls receiving case management, therapy and other services by the end of the fiscal year. Several girls have escaped the life with Kristi House s program and gone on to help others. Research, led by Dr. Jon Shaw of University of Miami on the clinical outcomes for children treated by Kristi House, showed significant improvement in trauma symptoms including anxiety,

Further analysis is looking at differences by age of perpetrator, ethnicity of victim, type of abuse, number of sessions versus outcomes and family structure factors. Underpinned by the belief that prevention is key to eradicating child sexual abuse, a national model program, Stewards of Children, has been instituted by Kristi House that focuses on teaching adults the skills to recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. The Training Manager position begun last year has effectively reached out to the provider and adult community as well as the general public with the help of a volunteer-based Speakers Bureau. For financial support, Kristi House s multifaceted approach of public and private fundraising will continue, enabled by Board and volunteer leadership. Kristi House s annual Touch a Heart Dinner led by Board members as well as non-board supporters has netted 10 to 15% of Kristi House s annual operating budget since it began in Board members have co-chaired Kristi House s Breaking the Silence, which is well on its way to reaching the goal of one million dollars in gifts and pledges in its first five years. Current effective programs will continue while creative, new fund raisers will be pursued. We will continue to work to leverage our strong track record and regional leadership to attract federal public funding support to Miami. At the same time, we thank those friends who continue at our side as we battle to end child sexual abuse in our community.
