5 Pros to living on-campus: You enjoy the sense of community you receive by living on campus. You don t want to worry about monthly payments, landlords or property managers. Cons to living off-campus: Your community environment is entirely dictated by your neighbors and community members. Your living environment is completely contingent on your landlord and can vary in quality. On-Campus students will have a better chance to interact with more faculty, staff, fellow students, and alumni on a day-to-day basis. On-Campus students will also enjoy a shorter distance to their classes, library, the Recreation & Wellness Center, or the Adron Doran University Center. On-Campus students also enjoy campus wifi in all halls. Off-Campus students will have longer commutes onto campus, and may find difficulty connecting to campus faculty and staff, along with finding a sense of community and pride, if they do not stay on campus except for classes.
6 On-Campus students don t have to worry about the cleaning and repair of shared spaces, as campus facilities will clean these spaces. Campus facility personnel are also available for emergencies outside of normal business hours. They are also available for minor repairs at no cost to students (except in cases of flagrant vandalism or damages). There are also campus staff that deal with pest control issues both proactively and reactively. Off-Campus students are responsible for cleaning and maintaining the upkeep of the location they are renting. Outside vendors and services can be brought in to locations, but will be an additional, and often costly, charge to the tenants. On-Campus students apply for housing through the Office of Housing and are signed to individual contracts. Housing staff work with residents to make alternative arrangements and/or provide options for suitable accommodations when vacancy occurs within their suite/room. Students can expect to pay a one-time application fee as long as they maintain their on-campus assignment. Contracts are through the academic year (August through May), and break housing is available for summer and winter. Off-Campus students can expect to pay an application fee to a landlord or property manager, along with being required to complete a background/credit check. It can be very difficult to break leases, and if a tenant does leave, the remaining financial obligations of that tenant may be placed on the remaining occupants of the unit.
7 On-Campus students are able to have conversations and conflicts be mediated by para-professional and professional staff in the residence halls. In extreme situations, a student may be able to move into a different room or hall with little to no impact on their housing contract. Off-Campus students must resolve conflicts with no mediation by a trained professional. The lease agreement may have to be broken if the conflict cannot be resolved and can often bring severe financial penalties with possible loss of a month s rent or housing deposit. On-Campus students are able to contact Para-professional and professional live-in staff or professional campus police officers at any time of the day or night if they feel their safety and security is at risk. Services such as lockouts, and referrals for vehicle assistance and other services are available through campus staff. Off-Campus students may have to find outside vendors for additional services not provided by the landlord. Property managers and landlords often do not provide any safety or security measures for the place of residence outside of a lock and key for the door.
