3 The Historic Seacoast Town of Duxbury Duxbury, known by the Native Americans as Mattakeesett, meaning place of many fish, was incorporated in Some of the most influential men in the Plymouth colony became Duxbury s first leaders. Captain Myles Standish lived in the Nook, now known as Standish Shore. In 1898, a Myles Standish monument was built in his honor. John Alden was also important to Duxbury. His house was the site of many important meetings of the colony s leaders and is now a museum on Alden Street. After the Revolutionary War, the most remarkable period in Duxbury s history was the shipbuilding era. Several families began to build large fishing schooners. The schooners gave way to larger brigs and eventually three-masted ships. The town was known for several larger fleets, shipyards and other ancillary industries making Duxbury a prosperous community. Ezra Weston, also known as King Caesar, soon became famous for his merchant fleet. By 1840, his son had constructed a ship called Hope, the largest vessel built in New England. His empire dominated the town. Ezra Weston s house became a museum, now owned by the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society. The shipbuilding era ended in the 1850s. Most sailing vessels were replaced by other modes of transportation such as steamships and railroads. By the 1870s, Duxbury s rural character and unspoiled bay began to attract summer visitors. Duxbury soon gained a reputation as an idyllic summer resort. Today, Duxbury is approximately 35 miles south of Boston and has more than 14,000 residents. Snug Harbor, on Duxbury Bay, is one of the most attractive recreational areas on the Massachusetts coast. Duxbury is a town with excellent schools, outstanding community services, and a pleasant residential atmosphere.
