1 Educating young people to help them to make successful and informed choices on their first home An educational resource for year olds

2 Comprehensive training resource aimed at improving the awareness of young people about the housing options available to them, the costs of the choices they make and how to be a good householder. Partnership project by the Homestamp Consortium

3 Our research with YOUNG PEOPLE showed. Young people often move into accommodation without a clear view of the costs, the options and the responsibilities they have. Flexible early intervention was seen as vital in enabling young people to make a successful move into independent living. Access to practical and financial help, as well as other sources of support and guidance, is the key to successful housing outcomes. Although many young people voiced a strong aspiration for home ownership, for others a social housing tenancy was a key aspiration in itself. Young people felt that they would move out below the age of 22 which they may need to re-think in this financial environment. Homestamp research statistics 2010/2011

4 Our research with LANDLORDS showed their top concerns that their tenants should know were Financial management managing bills etc. Paying rent (in the appropriate manner, on time etc.) Social responsibility treating the property like it was their own home Legal responsibilities of tenants and understanding landlord responsibilities Anti-social behavior 9 million people in England rent their homes. One third are families. 50% are over 35* Homestamp research statistics 2010/2011 *Shelter

5 Who can use A Home of Your Own Within the curriculum targeting year olds. Within FE establishments year olds. Disadvantaged young people including groups who work with the homeless.

6 is made up of four flexible lessons: Lesson 1: Housing Options Lesson 2: Costs of setting up and running your own home Lesson 3: Renting from private landlords Lesson 4: Renting your first home Each has its own lesson plans for teachers.

7 Lesson 1: Housing Options Where will you live? Didn t truly understand their housing options. Most wanted to move out between % thought they would eventually own their own home Over 85% of landlords rented property to year olds

8 Lesson 1: Housing Options What job will you do? What qualifications will you need to do this job? What will be your estimated salary? More understanding what career and therefore disposable income they will 40% expect to pay rent by being employed The ability for tenants to understand and manage their money

9 Lesson 1: Housing Options How much will a home cost to buy or rent? Didn t fully understand the high costs of buying or renting a home though 63% felt they would rent Over 25% thought they would pay 50 per month in rent for a one bedroom flat; though most expected between Majority of landlords rented a one bedroom flat for between per month with a deposit between

Didn t think of the full consequences of setting up a home; cookers and fridges were highest on the priority list internet access the least of their priorities.. 61% of landlords rented furnished property. However tenants will still need items for furnished flats

12 Lesson 2: Costs of setting up and running a home Household bills an overview and amount you can expect to pay what are priority debts and what are non-priority? Didn t fully understand the financial management of bills, although many had a good estimate of what they would be likely to pay each month The ability for tenants to understand and manage their money and pay rent

Over 50% thought they would rent council or housing association property many within 1 year The ability for tenants to understand landlords and tenants rights 50% rent to groups of house sharers

National Curriculum accreditation through PSHE and PFEG. Downloadable resource. Funding streams to extend the use of the pack through a variety of supported training and print versions.
