7 Eight West Third street, a nine story office building designed by architect Frank Pierce Milburn, was completed in early 1911 to become North Carolina s first skyscraper and the first true headquarters building for the recently created Wachovia Bank and Trust Company (created by the merger of Wachovia National Bank and The Wachovia Loan and Trust Company). Remnants of the former retail banking portion of the building still remain. Frank Pierce Milburn headed the Washington, D.C. based architectural firm, Milburn, Heister & Company. Milburn was a graduate of Arkansas University and was involved in the design of more than 250 structures, mostly institutional & government buildings in the Southeast. Eight West Third Street was completed at a cost of $150,000 and became the first metal-framed building on the skyline of Winston-Salem. In 1911, at seven stories, Eight West Third Street was the tallest office building in the downtown area. When the nearby O Hanlon Building was completed in 1915 and it surpassed Eight West Third as the tallest building in town, Wachovia Bank and Trust expanded to add an eighth floor that was completed in In 1984, the most substantial renovation in the buildings history took place. Envirotek, Inc. of Raleigh, NC oversaw the project and was challenged to modernize the building while retaining the historic heritage of the building. Among the improvements that were made in 1984 were new windows, restored granite, brick and marble, repaired rooftops and building carvings, installed modem demising walls and drop ceilings, replaced the elevators with modern equipment, updated the lighting, electrical and telephone capabilities of the building, upgraded HVAC systems and improved restrooms. Eight West Third, now nearly 100 years old, has watched over the downtown business district as three major home-grown companies, Wachovia Bank and Trust, R.J. Reynolds and Branch Banking and Trust Company, developed into Fortune 500 businesses. A truly iconic presence in Winston-Salem, Eight West Third Street remembers its history yet looks forward to contributing to the continued revitalization of the city s downtown core. Wachovia Bank and Trust Company used this building as its corporate headquarters for fifty-five years before it moved into a larger building on 301 North Main Street in In 1954 the building was completely remodeled and was fully air conditioned. Three years later, the building was retrofitted with its first elevators. When it moved from the building in 1966, Wachovia Bank and Trust donated the building to the local government for use as office space for city and county agencies. In 1981 the building was donated by the city to the Winston-Salem Foundation which subsequently sold the building to a partnership led by Gregory Poole Jr. and R.E. Barnhill, Jr. The new owners substantially renovated the building and converted it back into a general use office building which they named Forsyth Plaza. The current owners acquired the property in 2017 and have plan to renovate as Class A office space.
