Airline was, at one time, the major north-south artery for Baton Rouge residents. Inside the boundaries of the subject neighborhood, Airline Highway is improved with retail and light industrial (predominantly automotive repair) properties. Florida Boulevard, also known as U.S. Highway 190, is a major east-west traffic artery for the City of Baton Rouge, as well as the subject neighborhood. Within the boundaries of the subject neighborhood, Florida Boulevard is a six-lane, divided thoroughfare with frontage roads. Until the interstate highway system was constructed, it was the primary east-west thruway for Baton Rouge residents. Most improvements along Florida Boulevard are retail, with some office and apartment development. Cortana Mall is a one million square foot, regional shopping mall at the corner of Florida Boulevard and Airline Highway. South Choctaw Drive parallels Florida Boulevard to the north and turns to align with O'Neal Lane at Florida Boulevard, providing access to Interstate 12. The alignment with O Neal Lane was recently redesigned to connect the intersection with the Central Thruway (completed in 2014). Through the subject neighborhood, South Choctaw Drive is a four-lane, concrete thoroughfare with curbs and gutters. The Illinois Central Railroad runs along the north side of South Choctaw Drive, supporting industrial development, but also limiting access along the north side of South Choctaw Drive. South Choctaw Drive forms an older core of local light industrial development. From the Mississippi River (the western City boundary) to the eastern City limits, South Choctaw is predominantly improved with light industrial office/warehouse facilities. As growth in the corridor has occurred in an easterly direction over the past 30+ years, most newer improvements are to the eastern end of the neighborhood.
